--- Every year on May 3rd, the world observes World Press Freedom Day to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom. It serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991. It also marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of press freedom principles put together by African journalists in 1991. Why it Matters: Press freedom is essential for democracy, transparency, and accountability. A free press allows for informed citizens, protects against misinformation, and acts as a watchdog on power. Yet, around the world, journalists face threats, harassment, censorship, and even violence. 2024 Theme (Example): "A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis" This theme highlights the vital role of journalism in addressing the global climate and environmental challenges through accurate, investigative, and responsible reporting. What We Must Remember: Journalists should be able to report without fear or bias. Media independence is essential for truth and democracy. Attacks on journalists are attacks on the public’s right to know. On this day, let us honor the courage of journalists, especially those who risk their lives for truth—and commit to supporting a press that is free, fair, and fearless.
